Give the Gift of Reading: 5 Board Books for Toddlers

This holiday season I was honored to be featured by as a guest blogger.  Katie Hall, owner of, asked me to pick out some of my children’s favorite board books. Find the entire post here and make sure to check out her cute baby outfits and accessories! Here is a short excerpt:

A Christmas Carol Board Book The holiday season is the perfect opportunity to give the gift of reading! Today we asked children’s book author, Kristy Kurjan for her favorite board books for her little ones! Kristy is author of Nap-a-Roo Board Book, owner of KPO Creative LLC, and mother to three-year-old identical twin boys (with a girl on the way!) . What great suggestions she has! This is the perfect go-to reading list for your little ones this holiday season.

Reading to our little peanuts is one of the best gifts we can give this season. As a mother to 3-year-old identical twin boys, we have an entire book shelf full of “loved” books. With a baby girl on the way in February, I wanted to take a moment to reflect on which books my family has enjoyed the most over the past three years. From the newborn stage, to the “chewing” stage, and now transitioning into “early reader”, board books have played a huge part in my children’s development as well as giving us countless hours of bonding time together. We love to spend the time at night right before they go to sleep to read many of these books “again, again, and again!” Here are just a few of my family favorites:

A Christmas Carol, By Jennifer Adams: Considering it is December, I am starting my list of “favorite board books” with a holiday classic, BabyLit’s A Christmas Carol. My family is a huge fan of this Charles Dickens tale and it is simply a delight to share with our kids around the holidays. The illustrations have a specific look and we find joy in looking for the mouse on every page. With that being said, this book is a color primer, so while teriffic for the holidays it is relevant for other times of the year as well. It doesn’t truly tell the story of “A Christmas Carol” but those who know the story will understand the pictures and be able to tell it in their own words.

Little Blue Truck, By Alice Schertle: I have two boys and there is nothing little boys like more than TRUCKS! Little Blue Truck, by Alice Schertle, is a joy to read out loud. The story follows the adorable blue truck down the road and teaches the power of friendship. Beep! Beep! Beep! We could (and have!) literally read this book for hours.

Nap-a-Roo Board Book, By Kristy Kurjan: Obviously, I am a little bias on this one, as I am the author. However, this book is PERFECT for very young babies who take multiple naps a day. Developing a “nap time” routine that includes reading a short book is a great way to incorporate reading into a young babies day. When my twins were very little, it felt strange reading the “good night” books at two o’clock in the afternoon. Thus, Nap-a-Roo became a favorite. It was short enough for a quick read and still made sense when the sun was still shining! The bright colored characters catch even the littlest of eyes attention and bring a smile to their face.

Moo, Baa, La La La!, By Sandra Boynton: Oh the many reasons why I love Moo, Baa, La La La! Perhaps it was the sleepless nights, however, ever since I had my children I found this book hilarious. While this book is simply silliness at it’s finest, it also teaches the simple things in life. For example, “a cow says MOO” and “a sheep says BAA.” Sandra Boynton got is right with this one.

Sheep in a Jeep, By Nancy Shaw: Who doesn’t love five sheep in a Jeep?! While my sons tend to gravitate towards any book with a car on the cover, this one truly deserves the attention. It is well written and adorably illustrated. Sequels include: Sheep in a Shop, Sheep on a Ship, and Sheet Out to Eat- all equally enjoyable!
