Give the Gift of Reading: 5 Board Books for Toddlers

This holiday season I was honored to be featured by WynnRuby.com as a guest blogger.  Katie Hall, owner of WynnRuby.com, asked me to pick out some of my children’s favorite board books. Find the entire post here and make sure to check out her cute baby outfits and accessories! Here is a short excerpt:

A Christmas Carol Board Book The holiday season is the perfect opportunity to give the gift of reading! Today we asked children’s book author, Kristy Kurjan for her favorite board books for her little ones! Kristy is author of Nap-a-Roo Board Book, owner of KPO Creative LLC, and mother to three-year-old identical twin boys (with a girl on the way!) . What great suggestions she has! This is the perfect go-to reading list for your little ones this holiday season.

Reading to our little peanuts is one of the best gifts we can give this season. As a mother to 3-year-old identical twin boys, we have an entire book shelf full of “loved” books. With a baby girl on the way in February, I wanted to take a moment to reflect on which books my family has enjoyed the most over the past three years. From the newborn stage, to the “chewing” stage, and now transitioning into “early reader”, board books have played a huge part in my children’s development as well as giving us countless hours of bonding time together. We love to spend the time at night right before they go to sleep to read many of these books “again, again, and again!” Here are just a few of my family favorites:

A Christmas Carol, By Jennifer Adams: Considering it is December, I am starting my list of “favorite board books” with a holiday classic, BabyLit’s A Christmas Carol. My family is a huge fan of this Charles Dickens tale and it is simply a delight to share with our kids around the holidays. The illustrations have a specific look and we find joy in looking for the mouse on every page. With that being said, this book is a color primer, so while teriffic for the holidays it is relevant for other times of the year as well. It doesn’t truly tell the story of “A Christmas Carol” but those who know the story will understand the pictures and be able to tell it in their own words.

Little Blue Truck, By Alice Schertle: I have two boys and there is nothing little boys like more than TRUCKS! Little Blue Truck, by Alice Schertle, is a joy to read out loud. The story follows the adorable blue truck down the road and teaches the power of friendship. Beep! Beep! Beep! We could (and have!) literally read this book for hours.

Nap-a-Roo Board Book, By Kristy Kurjan: Obviously, I am a little bias on this one, as I am the author. However, this book is PERFECT for very young babies who take multiple naps a day. Developing a “nap time” routine that includes reading a short book is a great way to incorporate reading into a young babies day. When my twins were very little, it felt strange reading the “good night” books at two o’clock in the afternoon. Thus, Nap-a-Roo became a favorite. It was short enough for a quick read and still made sense when the sun was still shining! The bright colored characters catch even the littlest of eyes attention and bring a smile to their face.

Moo, Baa, La La La!, By Sandra Boynton: Oh the many reasons why I love Moo, Baa, La La La! Perhaps it was the sleepless nights, however, ever since I had my children I found this book hilarious. While this book is simply silliness at it’s finest, it also teaches the simple things in life. For example, “a cow says MOO” and “a sheep says BAA.” Sandra Boynton got is right with this one.

Sheep in a Jeep, By Nancy Shaw: Who doesn’t love five sheep in a Jeep?! While my sons tend to gravitate towards any book with a car on the cover, this one truly deserves the attention. It is well written and adorably illustrated. Sequels include: Sheep in a Shop, Sheep on a Ship, and Sheet Out to Eat- all equally enjoyable!

Holiday Season AuthorKristy Kurjan is the owner of KPO Creative LLC and author of Nap-a-Roo picture board book. She resides in Traverse City, Michigan with her three-year-old twin boys with a baby girl on the way! Her book, Nap-a-Roo, has received many national honors including the 2014 Silver Moonbeam Award for Best Board Book, the 2015 Silver IBPA Benjamin Franklin Award for Best Picture Book (0-3), and was named a Finalist in the 9th Annual National Indie Excellence Awards. Book and Blankee Gift Set
Rochester Hills, MI – In 1978, Barb MacKellar began knitting heirloom-quality baby blankets as a hobby to soothe her nerves as her oldest son spent countless hours in the hospital, receiving treatment for a congenital heart condition. Thankfully, Barb’s son grew and flourished as did her hobby. As many of her friends welcomed babies to their families, Barb knitted blankets for each new addition. Then friends of friends started asking for blankets of their own. When strangers started calling her house, requesting to speak to “The Blanket Lady,” a business was born.

In the late 1990’s, Barb moved her knitting machines out of her basement and into her husband’s company’s manufacturing facility in Rochester Hills, MI where she continues to work today as a division of MacKellar Associates, Inc. Today, people from all over the world, who received blankets as babies, are now ordering them for their own children. After 37 years, The Blanket Lady continues to hand-finish each custom blanket, taking as much pride in the blankets made today as those knitted decades ago.

Not only is Barb passionate about her knitting and giving back to the community, she always read books to her children, and now grandchildren. “Reading books is another passion of mine,” stated Barb. The Blanket Lady’s hope was to team with a Michigan author on the pairing of a blanket and a book, and was inspired to learn of Kristy Kurjan and her children’s book, “Nap-A-Roo.”

“I was thrilled when The Blanket Lady reached out to me,” stated Kristy. “The blankets are absolutely beautiful and I am honored to partner up on a pure Michigan gift package.” In just a few months of communications, both Kristy and The Blanket Lady team agreed that the color pallet on the “Nap-A-Roo” book cover would pair beautifully with a chevron blanket utilizing the “sunflower and chive” color scheme. A match was made.
